The Greek firefighters controlled the huge fire near Athens with the help of teams from 6 other countries. However, the fight against individual outbreaks in the suburbs continues.

The flames have engulfed over a hundred thousand acres of forests and low vegetation.

Teams from Romania, the Czech Republic, Italy and France, as well as from Turkey and Serbia, participated in the extinguishing under the European Civil Protection Mechanism.

700 firefighters with nearly 200 cars, 17 planes and 18 helicopters are battling the elements.

They are assisted by military, forest officials and many volunteers.

18 people were injured, including five firefighters, writes bTV.

Three hospitals, a children’s institution and two monasteries were evacuated.

Firefighters in Greece battled scattered fires today in hopes of containing the remnants of a large forest fire that broke out in the northern suburbs of Athens and prompted multiple evacuations. The disaster led to the death of a 60-year-old worker coming from Moldova.

Strong winds that fueled the flames on Sunday and Monday died down overnight, and the Greek fire service said the fire no longer had active advancing fronts and firefighters were focusing on extinguishing hundreds of slow-burning areas.
