More than 1,000 people have been arrested in the UK following anti-immigrant riots.
As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, this was reported by the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC).
“As of 13 August, 1,024 arrests had been made and 575 charges laid,” the body representing senior police officers said in a statement. The NPCC had previously warned that arrests of people suspected of taking part in the riots would continue for months to come.
The tragedy in Southport was the reason for the multi-day protests, which often escalated into clashes with the police and riots. There, on July 29, 17-year-old Aksel Rudakubana attacked participants in a children’s dance workshop with a knife. Three girls died, eight more children and two adults were injured. The attacker was detained.
According to The Times, Rudakubana has Rwandan roots, his family fled to the UK from the genocide in their homeland. However, unverified information immediately began to spread on social networks that the criminal was a Muslim, had sought asylum and was under the surveillance of counter-terrorism police. According to the authorities, this information provoked unrest.
