Parliamentary elections could reshape Azerbaijan’s role and influence in the region.

As reported by Day.Az on Tuesday, Turkish professor Mehmet Yuce stated this in an interview with the Independent Media Center “Elections2024”, who also shared his vision on the significance of the parliamentary elections to be held on September 1 in Azerbaijan.

He noted that the victory in the Second Karabakh War marked the beginning of a new era for Azerbaijan.

“Thanks to this victory, Azerbaijan liberated its territories occupied by Armenians during the First Karabakh War and fully restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Azerbaijan demonstrated its powerful army and strong leadership qualities.

In other words, Azerbaijan has transformed from a country with occupied territories into a victorious country that achieved this with its own efforts. This change in status naturally led to a rethinking of both Azerbaijan’s domestic and foreign policies.

Accordingly, presidential elections were held first. In the elections on February 7, President Ilham Aliyev was re-elected with a high result, after which a new strategy was determined,” he said.

According to him, Azerbaijan is now rapidly moving towards its goals, for the achievement of which new parliamentary elections are necessary in order to form a legislative body representing all territories of the country, including Karabakh.

He mentioned that the new parliament with newly elected members will steadily move towards achieving the country’s new goals.

“The parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan will also have important implications for regional politics. Azerbaijan is a key actor in the South Caucasus. These elections could reshape Azerbaijan’s political role and influence in the region.

A stable Azerbaijan can promote regional cooperation and help resolve other conflicts in the region. Ultimately, the parliamentary elections can lead to significant changes in both Azerbaijan’s domestic policy and regional processes. These changes can have a serious impact on the country’s future and the overall political and economic situation in the South Caucasus,” M. Yuce emphasized.

The Turkish professor also noted that from the point of view of international relations, elections in a country that has restored its territorial integrity are especially important for strengthening international legitimacy and support for Karabakh.

“A democratic and transparent electoral process will enhance Azerbaijan’s authority in the international arena and will help attract foreign investment.

In addition, the victory in Karabakh changed the balance of power in the South Caucasus. In this context, the upcoming elections will strengthen Azerbaijan’s new position and have a positive impact on diplomatic relations in the region,” M. Yuce added.

Earlier, Dean of the Faculty of Turkic World Economy at UNEC, Professor of Uludag University Mehmet Yuce noted that with the victory of Azerbaijan in the Second Karabakh War in 2020, a new situation has emerged in the region. Having restored its territorial integrity, Azerbaijan, on the one hand, is trying to establish sustainable peace with Armenia, and on the other hand, is making great efforts for regional stability. In this context, Azerbaijan is pursuing a diversified foreign policy, which has led to a number of important results in the country.
