Indian Hockey Retires Jersey Number 16 in Honor of Goalkeeper Sreejesh’s Contributions

New Delhi: Indian Hockey has decided to retire the number 16 jersey worn by goalkeeper Sreejesh.

Goalkeeper of the Indian team Sreejesh 36. He was the main reason for the Indian team winning bronze in Tokyo, Paris Olympics hockey. Retired from an 18 year hockey career, he is looking forward to coaching the next junior team.

The felicitation ceremony was held for him in Delhi. Hockey India (HI) officials and fellow players participated in it. HI, General Secretary Bola Nath Singh said, “Sreejesh has worn jersey number 16 on the retired senior team. This does not apply to the junior team though. Currently Sreejesh is going to coach the junior team. He will bring another Sreejesh. “That player will wear jersey number 16,” he said.

Sreejesh is proud of it

Sreejesh says, “My journey of 18 years is long. I have experienced many ups and downs on this. But that’s what made me a better person. I enjoyed every minute of playing on the international stage. Team India is my second family. “It’s sad that I can’t play with my teammates anymore,” he said.

Indian Hockey ‘God’

HI President Dilip Dirke said, “We appreciate Sreejesh’s contribution to Indian hockey over the past 18 years. Otherwise we did not respond to it. He can be called the hockey god of modern India,” he said.
