Despite the temporary suspension of the ban “Combination”, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) has announced decisive action against extremist efforts. “We will continue to oppose the enemies of the law very decisively,” Faeser said Wednesday in Berlin.

In a constitutional situation, there are judicial “review options,” Faeser continued. “And that’s a good thing. That is why we live in a democracy.

Interior Minister: We will continue to represent our legal opinion

In July, Faeser banned the magazine “Compact”. The Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig partially suspended the enforcement of the law on Wednesday in an expedited procedure. However, the final decision in what is called the first steps will not be made until later.

“We will continue to represent our legal counsel in primary proceedings as clearly and fully as possible,” Faeser said. He emphasized that in his emergency decision the court described the outcome of the first proceedings as open.

Meanwhile, the editor of the magazine “Compact”, Jürgen Elsässer, said at a press conference in Berlin that he saw the court’s decision in favor of his book as a victory against civil abuses. “Compact” prevailed over the “authoritarian, not to say fascist, victory of Interior Minister Nancy Faeser,” Elsässer said. “Yesterday was the victory of David over Goliath, it was the victory of democracy over tyranny and it was the victory of the people over government.”

Yesterday was the most important day for the protection of press freedom since the so-called “Spiegel” sex in 1962, said Elsässer. At that time, “Spiegel” was investigated on suspicion of stealing state secrets, and its editors and staff were arrested several times. Defense Minister Franz Josef Strauss (CSU) lost his office as a result.

The journalists’ association defended the response to the court’s decision

The German Association of Journalists (DJV) also welcomed the decision to revoke the ban on Wednesday as “a clear decision by the court to the fundamental right of freedom of the press”. The federal chairman of the DJV Mika Beuster said: “I would welcome it if the Federal Minister of the Interior wages his just fight against right-wing extremism while respecting guaranteed basic rights.”

After DJV received support for his statement from the far right, he did it on Thursday with the post marked as a comment your spokesperson. He said: “Are we at DJV playing into the hands of right-wing extremists with our reaction to the court’s decision? Is it better to be silent? Not twice at all. Even if we have to admit that the applause from the right is sweet.”
