The newly appointed governor of Bangladesh Bank. Ahsan H Mansoor said money launderers cannot sleep on the pillow of money. Money launderers should be caught. Those who were involved in these activities, if identified, will be brought under punishment.
He said these things in a press conference on Wednesday (August 14), the first working day after assuming the responsibility of the central bank governor.
The governor said, not only the government or Bangladesh Bank alone, but the money launderers should be caught with the help of the international community. We will create such a situation that those who took the money should be in trouble. They should not sleep on money pillows. For this we have to use international law.
He said that initiatives will be taken to reduce inflation in the beginning. At the rate at which inflation has risen, it will come down again at a normal pace. However, inflation will take some time to come down. Many banks have suffered due to the withdrawal of money from the banking sector.
Ahsan H. Mansoor said, chaos has been created in various banks. There is confusion over various claims and ownership. However, equitable matters of ownership will be dealt with in accordance with law. Banking sector reforms should be worked on. For this, financially weak banks have to sit. Initiatives will be taken in discussion with them.
Yesterday, Tuesday (August 13), the interim government appointed Ahsan H. Mansoor, an economist and former official of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as the governor of the central bank. The government also had to change the Bangladesh Bank Act to give Ahsan H. Mansoor, who served as the executive director of the private research institute Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI), the governorship. According to the law, no one above the age of 67 could hold the post of governor. That is why the law has to be amended to give that responsibility to Ahsan H. Mansoor, aged 72 years and 8 months. The proposal to remove the upper age limit for the appointment of the governor was sent to the President after it was approved by the Advisory Council of the Interim Government on Tuesday afternoon. Ordinances are promulgated after obtaining the assent of the President.
