On August 15, Liberation Day, KBS aired the opera ‘Madame Butterfly’ set in Japan and caused controversy by using an image of the upside-down Taegeukgi.

KBS broadcasted the opera ‘Madame Butterfly’ set in Japan on the ‘KBS Broadcasting Seat’ program at midnight on the 15th. Viewers criticized the broadcast on their homepages and social networking services (SNS), saying it was inappropriate to broadcast on Liberation Day.

Afterwards, KBS released a statement saying, “We apologize for causing concern and disappointment to viewers regarding the ‘KBS Broadcasting Seat’ program, a live broadcast of a performing arts recording.”

He continued, “The opera ‘Madame Butterfly’ is a work by Italian composer Puccini that depicts the tragic love between an American officer stationed in Japan and a Japanese woman. During the wedding scene between the main characters, the American and Japanese national anthems, Kimigayo, are played.” Additionally, the characters are wearing kimonos in this scene. He continued, “The performance was originally recorded on June 29 and was scheduled to air at the end of July, but it was pushed back due to the Olympics broadcast and ended up airing on the early morning of Liberation Day.” He added, “Considering the changed schedule, we once again deeply apologize for causing controversy on this meaningful Liberation Day due to the production team’s oversight in not being able to carefully check and review whether there were any problems with the broadcast content and whether it was appropriately timely.”

While saying, “In order to prevent something like this from happening again in the future, we will pay more attention to production, including investigating the circumstances of the broadcast and holding those appropriately held responsible,” they also said, “‘Madame Butterfly Part 2,’ which was scheduled to air on the 15th, will be replaced with a different performance broadcast.”

KBS was once again criticized for using an incorrect Taegeukgi image on its ‘930 News’ this morning.

KBS explained, “There was a mistake where some Taegeukgi images were reversed left and right,” and “This was the result of the producers using a computer graphics program to reverse the Taegeukgi images to match the scene where a character is holding the Taegeukgi.”

In doing so, KBS said, “After confirming the problem, we immediately corrected the Taegeukgi image and are re-providing the corrected video on our news homepage.” They added, “KBS sincerely apologizes for this mistake, and we will do our best to produce videos with meticulous attention to detail to prevent similar problems from recurring in the future.”
