Colombian exports of flowers and cut foliage have reached a new milestone in the first six months of this year, registering a remarkable increase of 12.3%, which translates into sales worth USD 1,282.6 million.

This growth underlines the importance of the flower sector in the Colombian economy, positioning it as the second most important sector after coffee.

A key factor behind this success has been the recent Certification granted by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) for the export of new varieties of carnations, developed in the Bogotá Savannah by a team of Colombian biologists. These carnations, whose quality has been rigorously verified in terms of phytosanitary conditions, shape and colour, are destined to conquer the markets of more than ten countries.

Wilkien Antonio Ramírez, Deputy Manager of Border Protection at ICA, highlighted the importance of this achievement by stating that “Colombia is the country that exports the most carnations in the world, and it is essential that the growth of this sector is supported by the ICA, an entity committed to the agricultural development of the country.”. The plant breeding work carried out by companies in the sector has been essential to ensure the competitiveness of these flowers in the international market.

The expansion of the presence of Colombian flowers in global markets has been consolidated thanks to the quality of the new carnations, which have captured the attention of countries such as Ecuador, Brazil, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa, Spain, Italy, Holland, China, Korea and Japan. These nations have become the main export destinations, recognizing the excellence of Colombian flowers.

In addition to its economic impact, the Colombian floriculture sector plays a vital role in generating employment, providing more than 200,000 formal jobs, mostly occupied by rural women and single mothers.
