Restoration of 21 temples affected by 2017 earthquakes concludes in Mexico City

With the delivery of the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Assumption of Mary of Milpa Alta, the capital government concluded the restoration of 21 temples damaged by the earthquake of September 19, 2017.

“With the delivery of this temple, we fulfill a commitment to restore and rehabilitate 21 temples assigned to the City Government, through the local Secretariat of Culture and the Commission for Reconstruction,” said the Commissioner for the Reconstruction of Mexico City, Jabnely Maldonado.

At the handover ceremony, she recalled that 197 temples were damaged in Mexico City, but after a tour conducted in 2018 by former Head of Government Claudia Sheinbaum, the now president-elect committed to communities to take care of 21 temples. “It is the only one we were missing,” she said.

Heading the event, the Head of Government, Martí Batres, acknowledged the fervor and religiosity that characterizes the people of Milpa Alta. Likewise, the capital’s leader recognized the temples and parishes as part of the cultural heritage of the City.

“The parish is very important for the people, it is a point of reference for identity, a point of cultural reference, but it is also the identity of the people,” he said.
