(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 16 AUG – International multicenter research projects on myocarditis, genetically determined cardiomyopathies, sudden death and heart failure, with young professionals in training who will work in authoritative international organizations; molecular actions of mutations in the titin and nexilin genes, evaluated through inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPS). These are some of the research projects that will be funded by the Asugi bequest, which pertains to the legacy of Prof. Attilio Maseri, cardiologist and international researcher, whose third anniversary of death will occur on September 3.
This is underlined by Gianfranco Sinagra, Director of the Cardiothoracovascular Department of ASUGI and UniTs.
In line with the wishes of Prof. Maseri and thanks to the legacy, Asugi has also funded 4 doctoral scholarships in the Departments of Life Sciences and Medical Sciences of the University of Trieste in the field of Molecular Cardiology and Genetics of Cardiomyopathies, and various awards and training activities have also been supported.
On the merits, Asugi has established a working group that manages and enhances the heritage and supports the professionals of Cardiology of the Cattinara University Hospital in the numerous initiatives launched.
In the research, Sinagra recalls, the studies will also have the aim of investigating the correlation between molecular and genetic defect and the evolution of the disease. A further line of research activated will explore the alterations of the metabolome associated with cellular aging in dilated cardiomyopathies by identifying biohumoral-metabolic markers that prove to be prognostic predictors that can be influenced by therapies. The translational research activities planned will integrate the lines of activity already started at the Cardiology of Trieste, part of international collaborations.
The University of Udine has established the Attilio Maseri Foundation, chaired by Professor Cristiana Compagno and has launched a series of initiatives. Originally from Friuli, with an international profile, “Prof. Maseri has held prestigious positions in prestigious national and international institutions. A very high-profile personality who has marked the history of the progress of knowledge with important studies on coronary physiopathology and inflammation in coronary syndromes – recalls Prof. Gianfranco Sinagra – Curious and inquisitive. Gentlemanly manner, vast culture, methodologically very rigorous and austere in research as in human relations. Great sportsman. For him, progress in knowledge had to be a challenge, non-conformism and obsequiousness to paradigms, an adventure of the mind and of life conducted with moral integrity”.
Maseri, scientist and benefactor, will be remembered with a memorial service organized by the Foundation of the same name in Udine, on September 3rd in the Church of Persereano.
