In a press conference, Presidential Council member Musa Al-Koni issued strong warnings about the danger of Libya’s division and reaching the brink of a new war, blaming all political and military parties for their failure to find solutions to the crisis and manage the state effectively.
Al-Koni considered that Libya is now divided, and its citizens are united only by their passports and flags, pointing to the existence of two separate governments, the sharing of money, and the armies lying in wait for each other, warning of their move at any moment to launch a new war and “push Libya into the tunnel of fighting again.”
Al-Koni held all Libyan officials responsible for their failure to manage the state, describing them as “sectarian princes” who rule separately without any of them controlling the situation, comparing the current situation to “ancient Andalusia” when brother fought brother and sects cooperated with their enemies, which led to their defeat, according to his description.
Al-Koni stressed the necessity of preserving Libya’s unity and not giving up any part of its territory, affirming that the successive crises that the country has been going through for years have led to it taking two steps back.
In the context of his statements, Al-Koni pointed out that the Presidential Council has limited powers, stressing that the goal of them having the powers of the Supreme Commander of the Army is “to prevent any party from using it to declare a state of emergency or war.”
Al-Koni stressed that “the army in the eastern region does not obey their orders at all,” pointing out his inability to use his powers even in the western region as the supreme commander of the army.
Al-Koni criticized all current Libyan institutions for “clinging to power,” blaming the House of Representatives and the High Council of State for not being a role model for Libyans as elected bodies, adding that they are “the main obstacles to the electoral process.”
Al-Koni said that Aguila Saleh, Haftar and Saif al-Islam Gaddafi all want to be president of the state, indicating that this is their right, but it must be done through free and fair elections.
