Islamabad: It has been 78 years since the independence of India and Pakistan. Pakistan is celebrating its 78th Independence Day on Wednesday, 14 August. Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who is called Quaid-e-Azam in Pakistan, had fought for a separate country for Muslims. After the formation of Pakistan, Jinnah, the leader of the Muslim League, had mentioned many dreams for the new country. However, after about eight decades, today Pakistan has failed on the economic front and has also failed in foreign policy and domestic affairs. The country’s leading newspaper Dawn has written its editorial on how Pakistan is lagging behind instead of progressing and what is the role of politicians in this.
Dawn writes in its editorial that Pakistan is celebrating Independence Day at a time when the country is struggling with economic instability, political polarization and extremism. These crises are not new. Since independence, the country has been moving from one crisis to another, but in the current circumstances, there is a mountain of despair over the country. Especially the youth are losing hope of living a respectable life.

People are not seeing a ray of hope

The article says that there has been little effort from the ruling class to alleviate the despair. This is why 24 crore people are not seeing any hope. Governments say that the economy is improving but a large part of the population is suffering from inflation and people are falling into poverty. On the political front, it seems that no one wants to work to achieve harmony. Extremist forces are continuously swallowing this country of Jinnah.

Pakistan has been steadily moving away from Jinnah’s vision over the past decades. If Allah allowed Jinnah to see today’s Pakistan, he would not even recognize this country. Jinnah left a blueprint for how the country should be run but whoever came to power after him did everything in his power to ensure that none of his instructions were implemented. For example, Jinnah talked about democracy, constitutionalism, protection of minorities, elimination of corruption. Every government has done the opposite.

The governments formed in Pakistan have trampled underfoot the dignity of the vote. No one has understood that ‘true’ freedom can be achieved only when the children of Pakistan are assured of a better tomorrow. The people of the country are freed from a stifling existence and can achieve their full potential.
