Liverpool FC won their first competitive match after the Klopp era. However, the team only set the course for victory in the second half against newly promoted Ipswich.
Liverpool FC has successfully started the new Premier League season with a 2-0 away win (0-0) at newly promoted Ipswich Town. Diogo Jota put the “Reds” in the lead after an hour (60′). Top star Mohamed Salah doubled the lead five minutes later (65′).
For Liverpool, it was the first game after the Klopp era. The German coach, who won the 2019 Champions League and the 2020 championship with the club, resigned from his position at Anfield in the summer after seven years.
His successor is the Dutchman Arne Slot. The 45-year-old, who moved to England from Feyenoord Rotterdam, can now record his first success with his new team. He will make his home debut next week when Liverpool face Brentford FC.
Slot relied on Jota as striker in Ipswich, with Darwin Núñez and European Championship star Cody Gakpo initially sitting on the bench. The first half of the Slot era got off to a slow start in front of musician and Ipswich fan Ed Sheeran, who has recently become an investor in the promoted team. The underdog even looked more dangerous. Shortly before the break, Trent Alexander-Arnold (45th) had the first half-chance, but shot the ball over the bar.
The “Reds” only became really dangerous in the second half. First, a free Jota (59th) headed the ball wide from close range, and a minute later the Portuguese coolly finished off a pass from Salah. The Egyptian increased the lead after a great one-two with Dominik Szoboszlai.
