After a few minutes, it looked as if Borussia Mönchengladbach was in danger of a cup embarrassment. But the “Fohlen” turned the game around – and scored some impressive goals.

Borussia Mönchengladbach has reached the second round of the DFB Cup. The “Fohlen” beat third division club Erzgebirge Aue 3-1, but were behind early on. In the eighth minute, it was Mika Clausen who put the Saxons in the lead. Aue continued bravely, but over time Gladbach became stronger and played to its quality. Franck Honorat scored with an overhead kick (35th minute), Luca Netz (52nd minute) and Alassane Pléa (70th minute) increased the lead.

In the parallel match, second division team Greuther Fürth defeated TSV Schott Mainz 2-0. Dennis Srbeny (8th) and Marlon Mustapha (82nd) scored the goals.

Despite some adversity, Borussia Mönchengladbach has reached the second round of the DFB Cup. The Bundesliga club beat third division club Erzgebirge Aue 3-1 (1-1) on Saturday, thus overcoming its opening hurdle for the eleventh time in a row – and after the difficult last season, they were able to celebrate some extremely impressive goals right from the start.

Franck Honorat (35th) was successful with an overhead kick, Luca Netz (52nd) scored without hesitation into the corner. Alassane Pléa (70th) later added another, turning the game around in the second half. Aue had shocked the Bundesliga team early on with a perfect attack, Mika Clausen gave the hosts the lead in the eighth minute. Immediately before the break, Gladbach’s Julian Weigl was also denied a penalty (45th+5) by Aue captain Martin Männel.

It was therefore a somewhat complicated start to the new season, which is expected to bring better times for Borussia. The club had disappointed last season, finishing 14th in the table, but coach Gerardo Seoane was allowed to stay, then won every game in the summer preparations and got some interesting new signings: midfielder Kevin Stöger (from Bochum) and striker Tim Kleindienst (from Heidenheim) were in the starting eleven on Saturday.

Aue was an unpleasant draw for the first competitive match. The Saxons had already played two third division matches and won both, and they showed their confidence in the first few minutes. The ball went from Borys Tashchy to Kilian Jakob, whose perfect cross was volleyed in by Clausen. After about half an hour, however, Gladbach found their rhythm, and after Honorat’s overhead kick from nine meters, the game was mainly directed at the hosts’ goal.

Second division team Fürth also avoided a cup embarrassment. Coach Alexander Zorniger’s team took control of the game from the start and took the lead straight away through Dennis Srbeny. Mainz were challenged from then on, but rarely came close to scoring.

Nevertheless, the underdog became more confident from minute to minute and defended itself against the second division team. However, the Austrian Marlon Mustapha gave Mainz the knockout in the final phase.
