Vandalism raid in the center of Merano. 150 plants targeted – Merano

by times news cr

MERANO. He must have had it in particular with the cleome spinosa, the vandal, or perhaps the vandals. Responsibility in the singular or plural? Perhaps it will be ascertained, given that in the wide radius of action there are several surveillance cameras and it is not excluded that it will be possible to identify who was brutalizing the flowerbeds and other floral compositions on the Lungopassirio and its surroundings, during the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

The raid.

Those pink and lilac flowers are the protagonists in this period of the flowerbeds of the center, one of our flagships of the city. Those who walked on the morning of Ferragosto in the living room on the banks of the Passirio, had to note that beauty does not always manage to educate. On the pavement lay many plants, and especially specimens of cleome spinosa, uprooted from their place. Other pots overturned.

The municipal gardening department – which does not go on holiday on August 15th but does its best to keep the floral jewels it creates and cares for in good condition – intervened to restore as quickly as possible what had been devastated in the night raid. Lungopassirio from Ponte Teatro to Ponte della Posta, but also the vases on the windowsills of the Tourist Board: “About 150 plants were damaged or uprooted” confirms Andreas Spöttl, head worker of the municipal gardening department. “We did everything possible to restore the flowerbeds”, aware of the fact that the city – as was also seen yesterday with the very busy center despite the new semi-tropical day – is at the height of the season, with many tourists admiring the beauties of Merano. Among the most popular selfies, even without the Dolomite queues, are the flowerbeds and other delights branded Giardinerie.

Respect.

“It is truly sad to see how the work and dedication of our gardeners, who design and care for the flowerbeds with such passion, are being undermined by senseless acts of vandalism,” commented Deputy Mayor Katharina Zeller, who is responsible for public greenery and the environment. “These gestures demonstrate a lack of respect for the community and for the commitment of our municipal gardeners.”
