On the morning of Wednesday, August 14, the La Aurora International Airport It became the meeting point for hundreds of Guatemalans eager to welcome the athletes who represented the country at the Paris 2024 Olympic GamesThe excitement and national pride were palpable as the athletes arrived home after their participation in the world’s biggest sporting stage.

The welcome caravan The parade began at around 12:30 p.m. and passed through several iconic spots in Guatemala City. Among the notable places where the parade passed are the Plaza Obelisco, the Guatemala City Hall, the Sports Palace, Reforma Avenue and the Hotel Real InterContinental. The latter is the setting for a press conference with the athletes and authorities of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee.

On board the bus that was part of the caravan were the Olympic athletes Kevin Cordón, Jose Barrondo, Alberto Gonzalez, Jacqueline Solís, Waleska Soto, Sebastian Bermudezsome coaches and of course, the Medalists Adriana Ruano, Jean Pierre Brol and Erick Barrondo.

A welcome full of national pride

The parade through the streets of the capital city was an example of how sport can unite a country. Guatemalans of all ages and occupations left their daily work for a moment to go out into the streets and greet the national heroes. Some took a break from work, while others looked out from the windows of buildings to be part of this celebration. How cool!

The colors blue and white predominated along the route with the Guatemalan flags waving in the hands of enthusiasts and athletes, as well as being present on caps, t-shirts and even costumes worn by some Chapines. At some points the National Anthem resounded loudly, accompanying the caravan in its passage.

The excitement was felt not only among the spectators, but also among the athletes themselves. On board the bus, the athletes did not stop greeting and thanking the Guatemalans who encouraged them throughout the journey. Adriana Ruano and Jean Pierre Brol, Olympic medalists from Guatemala in Paris 2024, took some time to sign autographs and take selfies with the cell phones handed to them from the crowd.
