The sport loved by millions has disappeared from the program of the Olympic Games: there is still a chance to return

This is boxing, which has been the subject of more gender scandals in Paris.

The IOC does not currently include boxing in the Los Angeles program.

IOC President Thomas Bach said boxing could still return, but a decision must be made within 2025.

“Within the next year and as soon as possible.” We cannot wait longer than the end of next year”, Th. Bach said when asked when the future of boxing will be finally decided.

Th. Bach indicated that, unlike the Tokyo and Paris Games, the organization will no longer hold boxing competitions.

Until then, the International Boxing Association (IBA) was responsible for boxing at the Olympic Games. The IBA was suspended by the Olympic Committee back in 2019 due to severe governance, financial, refereeing and ethical violations. The Kremlin-connected IBA, whose head Umar Kremlev is a friend of Vladimir Putin, has long been mired in scandals.

In 2023, the IOC announced that it no longer recognized the organization and began to raise questions about the IBA prize money.

“As always with the IBA, it is not clear where the money came from. One of the main reasons why the IOC no longer recognizes the IBA is the lack of full financial transparency. The IBA was not ready to transparently explain the sources of its funding and explain its financial dependence on Gazprom, the sole company at the time, the IOC said in a statement in May.

In 2023, a new organization, the World Boxing Association, was created. It currently has 37 members. The latter organization has not yet been recognized by the IOC.

The IOC said that for boxing to return to the Olympic Games, it needed a credible organization: “Olympic boxing must be organized by a credible international organization with proper governance. It goes without saying that any boxer whose national federation belongs to the IBA will not be able to compete in the Olympic tournaments. Each country’s National Olympic Committees will have to remove IBA-affiliated national boxing federations from their membership list.”

The feud between the IOC and the IBA deepened further during the Paris Games. With the Games already under way, the IBA announced that two athletes – Algerian boxer Imane Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting – had been expelled from last year’s world championships after they allegedly underwent gender tests that showed they had a male chromosome. U.Kremlev also spread this information, but so far there is no evidence that it is true.

The Algerian and Taiwanese boxing federations threatened legal action over such claims, while the IOC called the claims an attempt to disrupt the Olympic boxing tournament, which was organized by the International Olympic Committee itself.

Boxing in the Olympic Games since 1904. Boxing was absent only at the 1912 Olympic Games, as this sport was banned by Swedish law at the time.

Olympic boxing medalists include Roy Jones Jr., Lennox Lewis, Floyd Mayweather Jr., Joe Razier, George Foreman, Anthony Joshua, and Muhammad Ali.
