New Delhi: The rape-murder case of a doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has shaken the entire country. There have been protests across the country over the matter. The case is now being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under an order of the Kolkata High Court. A CBI official said on Friday, ‘We have identified at least 30 suspects and have started questioning them.’ Former India captain and former BCCI president Sourav Ganguly condemned the incident and said that the punishment should be strict. He also clarified one of his earlier statements on the issue. Many social media users had earlier said that Ganguly had called it a ‘one-time incident’.What did Sourav Ganguly say about the whole matter?
Sourav Ganguly told reporters, ‘I said last Sunday, I don’t know how it was interpreted or explained. I have said it before, it is a terrible thing. Now CBI, police are investigating the case. What happened is very shameful. I hope that CBI, which is investigating the case, will give strict punishment if found guilty. The punishment should be such that no one dares to commit such a crime again in his life. This is important. The punishment should be strict.’
Amid growing protests over the rape-murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata hospital, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a nationwide strike during which routine OPD services and elective surgeries will not be conducted. However, all emergency services will remain operational.
IMA made a special demand for resident doctors
The IMA, India’s largest doctors’ body, has demanded changes in the working and living conditions of resident doctors, including 36-hour shifts and safe rest areas. It has also demanded a central law to prevent violence against medical professionals at the workplace.
