Politicians mention that A. Kubilius may be proposed as a candidate for European Commissioners: there is such a rumor

by times news cr

“As they say, magpies carry such a rumor around town.” I don’t know how justified it is, but it is about Andrii Kubilias. However, we haven’t heard anything officially yet,” said Saulius Skvernelis, the leader of the Democratic Union “Vardan Lietuvos” to Elta.

According to the opinion of the representative of the opposition, working in the European Commission (EC) should not cause any difficulties for ex-premier A. Kubilis.

“If this candidacy is named, then it will be possible to comment in more detail. However, I think that he (A. Kubilius – ELTA) should not face any obstacles, at least in the European Parliament or the European Commission. In Lithuania, everyone remembers the activities of his Government, so I don’t know how it will be here”, thought S. Skvernelis.

At the end of June, the elder of the Liberal faction in the Seimas, Eugenijus Gentvilas, said that he proposed the candidacy of A. Kubilius in the coalition council. However, as he told Elta on Sunday, it is not yet known who the Head of Government Ingrida Šimonytė will nominate for the post of European Commissioner.

“So far, nothing has been said to us. Although I was the first to speak about the candidacy of Andrias Kubilius, it does not mean that it will be so. I have the right and freedom to reason, but I don’t know what the prime minister will provide to the coalition”, said E. Gentvilas.

ELTA reminds that for a long time it was unofficially said that the Minister of Foreign Affairs G. Landsbergis was applying for the post in Brussels. However, he told Elta on Friday that he had received information that President Gitanas Nausėda would not approve of his candidacy for European Commissioner. Therefore, according to the conservative leader, Prime Minister I. Šimonytė should look for other names when looking for a candidate for the EC.

On Saturday, the minister tweeted that although it would have been an honor for him to work as a European Commissioner, he would serve Lithuania in other ways. At that time, Frederiks Janson, the chief adviser to the president, said that the candidate will be the person who will be able to fill the mentioned positions and will be coordinated between the institutions. G. Nausėda himself, whose approval is necessary for the delegation of Lithuania’s representative to the EC, has stated that he sees better candidates than G. Landsbergis.

On Monday, the names of the EC candidates will be discussed at the coalition council meeting.

The nomination of the Eurocommissioner is submitted by the Government after the position has been agreed with the President and the Seimas.
