The scene of the National Convention held on the 18th to elect the new leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea was filled with festive excitement.

The convention is currently underway at the KSPO Dome in the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in Songpa-gu, Seoul, starting at 1 p.m. The venue is packed with over 10,000 supporters, including delegates and party members, who came from all over the country to cheer on the eight candidates for party leader and supreme council members.

The outside of the stadium was crowded with supporters hours before the event began. Despite the heat, the supporters cheered for their candidates. They lined the hundreds of meters from the stadium gate to the entrance of the stadium, waving cheering sticks, balloons, vuvuzelas, and other cheering tools and raising their voices.

Supporters of Min Hyung-bae and Lee Eun-ju, the supreme council members, put in a lot of effort in their last-minute campaigns, carrying large balloons symbolizing the order of each candidate’s number. In particular, the Min campaign group attracted attention by even using balloons shaped like books and clothing. The Han Jun-ho campaign group appealed for votes by wearing T-shirts with the face of candidate Han on them.

The booth of Supreme Council candidate Jeong Bong-ju, who had been called for by strong party members to resign due to the controversy over Lee Jae-myung’s backbiting, was relatively quiet. A party member near the booth held a placard demanding disciplinary action against candidate Jeong, but there were no clashes between supporters.

The candidates also showed off their strength by visiting the cheering camp before entering the venue. They responded to supporters’ requests to shake hands and took pictures with them. Representative Yang Moon-seok, who visited the venue, was also caught dancing in response to the support from some party members.

Inside and outside the event venue, there were merchandise shops, photo booths, and food trucks, adding to the festival atmosphere. In particular, the merchandise shop was so crowded that there was a long line waiting to enter from the morning of that day.

When the party leadership candidates Kim Ji-soo, Kim Du-kwan, and Lee Jae-myung, and the supreme council candidates Kim Byung-joo, Kang Sun-woo, Jeong Bong-ju, Min Hyung-bae, Kim Min-seok, Lee Un-ju, Han Jun-ho, and Jeon Hyeon-hee (in order of nomination) entered the convention hall, cheers and chants erupted from the hall. The sight of supporters waving their cell phone flashlights in unison was reminiscent of a concert hall.

The results of the party convention primary will be announced at 6:15 p.m. today. The new leadership will be selected by combining 14% of delegates, 56% of registered party members, and 30% of public opinion polls.

With Lee Jae-myung running in an overwhelming lead, attention is focused on whether the ‘old Dae-myung Koo (Lee Jae-myung as party leader with 90% of the votes)’ will become a reality. Attention is also focused on the final list of five people who will be eligible to be elected as supreme council members.
