Day four in the legends jungle and one by one the candidates are talking about the highs and, above all, the lows in their lives. Elena Miras is one of them.
Editor’s note: The content of this article comes from the jungle camp episode, which will not be shown on linear TV until August 19th, but is already available on RTL+.
She is tougher than anyone else. As soon as she moved into the jungle camp, Elena Miras caused a stir – and above all trouble. Now, just one day later, the Swiss woman is showing her emotional side. In tears, the 32-year-old tells her fellow contestants Gigi Birofio and Thorsten Legat about her psychological problems. “The psyche is the most important thing we have,” says Elena Miras, fighting back tears. “Without it, you are absolutely nothing. Depression is the worst thing in this world, the worst.”
In 2023, Elena Miras contracted trigeminal neuralgia. This is a rare chronic pain disorder in which the largest facial nerve, the trigeminal nerve, plays a major role. This nerve is responsible for the sensation of the face and mucous membranes. The nerve disease led to Elena Miras becoming depressed, but she did not notice it at first. “I kept going, kept going, kept going, kept going. My body told me: Stop, Elena, stop! Pause!” She kept going until she couldn’t anymore.
“Last summer I lost 45 kilos” – at a height of 1.63 meters. “And then I realized: OK, I have to take care of myself, now I have to look: What is that? I didn’t notice it,” Elena Miras continues. “The point where I realized that I needed help now – professional help – was when I had my child in front of my eyes and I was empty inside. My daughter is my everything. My child is my life.” In 2018, Elena Miras became a mother for the first time. Aylen is now six years old. “I look at my daughter and my feelings just bubble out of me. But there was just nothing left.”
She took her daughter to kindergarten with a smile, but she was completely devoid of emotion. “Broken from the inside. Shattered. Destroyed. I felt nothing. Nothing. Zero. And I kept trying to get up and carry on somehow.” It was only when Elena Miras sought help from a psychologist that she got an answer: she was suffering from depression. Today, thanks to professional help, she is feeling better again. “I only managed it because I took this help. I went to the psychologist twice a week until I felt better again.”
Above all, the thought of her daughter helped her. Aylen was her “only hope” and “greatest support”. “When I looked at her, I knew I had to keep fighting. Thanks to her, I made it out of there,” says Elena Miras. “When you have a child, you always think of your child and think: Come on, you can do it!”
On August 15, “I’m a Celebrity – The Showdown of the Jungle Legends” started on RTL+. On linear television, the special broadcast to mark the show’s 20th anniversary only started a day later. The jungle camp will be hosted as usual by Sonja Zietlow and Jan Köppen. However, “I’m a Celebrity – The Showdown of the Jungle Legends” will not take place in Australia this year, but in South Africa. The show was also recorded. Filming took place several weeks ago.
