The evening, entitled “El Nuevo Mundo. The South American Baroque,” will be presented by the groups Ars Vulgaris and Cenacolo Musicale, two groups known for their dedication to the rediscovery and valorization of ancient music. The concert will offer an extraordinary repertoire that ranges from enchanting melodies and lively rhythms, all characteristic of the Spanish-American Baroque period.

The evening’s program

The program includes a selection of pieces that reflect the richness and diversity of baroque music in the Spanish colonies of Latin America between the 17th and 18th centuries. Highlights include “Los Canarios” by Juan Girolamo Kapsberger, “Pajarillo verde,” a Venezuelan folk song, and the evocative “Tonada del Chimo” from Peru’s Codex Trujillo. Other pieces such as “Cachua serranita” and “Lanchas para bailar” from the Codex Martínez Compañón highlight the profound influence that indigenous and African cultures had on the development of baroque music in the region.

The interpreters

The stage will feature highly talented musicians, including Francesca Biliotti (contralto), Robindro Nikolic (chalumeau, duduk), César Alejandro González (viola and Venezuelan cuatro), Donatella Busetto (organ and harpsichord), Francesco Savoretti (percussion) and Alvise Seggi (double bass). These artists, with their performances, promise to bring to light the hidden beauty of the South American Baroque, offering the audience an authentic and engaging musical experience.

The Spanish-American Baroque: A Heritage to be Rediscovered

The Spanish American Baroque is a musical treasure that, while largely unknown to the general public, represents a fascinating fusion of European, indigenous, and African musical traditions. This music is characterized by rich and diverse instrumentation, combining European instruments such as the organ and harpsichord with native and African ones such as the charango and maracas. The result is a distinctive sound that captures the cultural essence of the Spanish American lands of the period.
