The Democratic Party of the United States announced a 92-page platform on the 18th (local time), a day before the start of its national convention to officially nominate Vice President Kamala Harris as its presidential candidate, stating, “We will stand up to the threat from North Korea together with our ‘valued ally’ South Korea.” In particular, the Democratic Party repeatedly emphasized the value of the South Korea-US alliance through its platform, including criticizing Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s call for the withdrawal of US troops from South Korea. It also mentioned that if Vice President Harris wins the November presidential election, she will strengthen the alliance and expand partnerships in the Indo-Pacific.

The Democratic Party stated in its platform that day, “President Joe Biden has stood with our allies, especially South Korea, in the face of North Korea’s provocations, including its illegal missile capability buildup,” and “will continue to do so.” It repeatedly emphasized the importance of trilateral cooperation among South Korea, the United States, and Japan in Indo-Pacific security, and evaluated that “by strengthening trilateral cooperation, stability is being maintained throughout the Korean Peninsula.”

They criticized Trump’s policy toward the Korean Peninsula as not only threatening allies but also harming American interests. The Democratic Party pointed out that “Trump embarrassed the United States by exchanging ‘love letters’ with ‘dictator’ North Korean State Affairs Commission Chairman Kim Jong-un,” and “he directly threatened South Korea, a valuable ally, by mentioning the withdrawal of US troops from South Korea due to the trade dispute with South Korea.” They also diagnosed that cooperation with allies such as South Korea is necessary for the United States to maintain its ‘innovation leadership’ in the economic and technological sectors.

This platform consists of nine areas: △economic growth centered on the lower and middle classes, △rewarding ‘work’ rather than ‘wealth,’ △reducing citizens’ spending costs, △responding to the climate crisis, reducing energy costs and securing energy independence, △protecting communities and responding to gun violence, △strengthening democracy and protecting freedom, △secure borders and reforming the broken immigration system, △strengthening integration, and △strengthening American leadership.

Meanwhile, the platform still had ‘President Biden’ as the subject. This is interpreted to mean that even if the presidential candidate changes, the content of the platform will not change.
