Russian prosecutors have declared the Clooney Foundation for Justice, founded by American actor George Clooney and his wife Amal Clooney, an “undesirable” organization because of its “Hollywood-style” work to discredit Moscow, Reuters reported.
The “undesirable” label has been placed on dozens of foreign organizations since Moscow began using the classification in 2015, effectively banning them, Reuters noted.
“The foundation works on a Hollywood scale to discredit Russia,” the General Prosecutor’s Office said in a message on the Telegram social platform, without providing evidence, BTA reports.
She “actively supports false patriots who have left the country, participants in banned extremist groups and terrorist organizations,” said the prosecutor’s office, quoted by TASS.
“Under the guise of humanitarian ideas,” the organization promotes initiatives to prosecute Moscow’s top leadership and publicly disseminates negative assessments of Russian legislation on foreign agents and NGOs, she added.
The foundation has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
In addition to non-profit organizations, the list of undesirable organizations in Russia also includes media, political, cultural and religious groups, which Moscow considers to be a threat to the country’s security.
