A fire believed to have been caused by electric cars has destroyed more than 200 vehicles in Lisbon, Portugal.

According to local media outlets such as Portugal Resident on the 17th (local time), a fire broke out at a rental car parking lot near Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado International Airport at around 6:00 PM the previous day, burning down about 200 vehicles.

The fire is believed to have started in a Tesla electric car. Portuguese broadcaster SIC reported that “the fire started in an electric car parked on the top floor of a rental car company’s parking lot and spread to other vehicles,” and that “several explosions were heard at the scene. The rental car company had flammable materials, making it difficult to put out the fire.” Portuguese daily Correio da Maña also reported that “the fire started in the Tesla and spread to other vehicles.”

The fire was reportedly extinguished in about five hours. Authorities mobilized about 140 firefighters to try to extinguish the fire, but it was reported that they had difficulty due to flammable materials such as automobile fuel and the wind.

Thick smoke from the fire obscured the sky, causing delays to several flights and disrupting airport operations. Fortunately, the damage did not spread to nearby homes. There were no casualties.

Local authorities have expressed concern that “even among the vehicles that did not burn, there may be damage caused by the heat released by the fire.”

Recently, a fire broke out in an electric vehicle in Korea. On the 1st, a Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle parked in an apartment building in Cheongra-dong, Seo-gu, Incheon caught fire, burning 140 nearby vehicles and forcing 120 residents to evacuate. On the 19th, the police and fire department conducted a third investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire.
