China Demolishes Some Overseas Meteorological Observatory Towers… “Threat to National Security”

by times news cr

China has been investigating and demolishing some of the meteorological observation towers in China, citing threats to national security. Since last year, China has been strengthening control by continuously revising the Anti-Espionage Law and the State Secrets Protection Law, expanding the scope of state secrets and the authority to investigate.

The Ministry of National Security announced on the 18th through social media (SNS) that a company linked to a foreign intelligence agency was illegally collecting sensitive data through meteorological observation towers and transmitting them overseas. A meteorological observation tower is a tower-type structure used to measure wind speed, wind direction, and other meteorological data.

According to the Ministry of National Security, there was also a report of an illegal meteorological observation tower being installed near a coastal city. An inspection revealed that the facility was capable of not only collecting meteorological data, but also analyzing and transmitting it. Another meteorological observation tower installed next to a scientific research base was also demolished due to concerns about a complex data transmission path and potential information leaks, the Ministry of National Security explained.

The Chinese government inspected more than 3,000 weather observation facilities, including about 10 foreign weather observation company employees, from January to October last year. Among them, hundreds of illegal facilities were found to have posed a threat to national security by transmitting weather data overseas in real time, the government disclosed in October last year. The Ministry of State Security said, “According to relevant laws, foreign weather observation facilities cannot be installed in areas sensitive to national defense and military, areas not open to the public, or areas of large-scale construction projects.”

On the 19th, China’s state-run Global Times reported this news, saying, “Meteorological data near military facilities is also used for military operations. It is the basis for accurate deployment. Protecting meteorological data is like protecting China’s military defense line.”
