(ANSA) – SAN SALVADOR, AUGUST 20 – A tree born from “space seeds” has been planted for the first time in Latin America.
It is a maquilishuat, the national plant of El Salvador, whose seeds traveled far from Earth with the Salvadoran astronaut Frank Rubio. The specimen can now be seen at the Tin Marín Children’s Museum in San Salvador after spending 371 days aboard the International Space Station.
“We are very happy to receive this tree that symbolizes the fruit of a journey full of hopes and so much effort. It reminds us that goals can be achieved and that the girls and boys of El Salvador can make all their dreams come true,” said the director of Tin Marín, Juan Carlos Novoa.
Of the 16 seeds that Rubio took to the cosmos, only one managed to germinate after being sown on April 12. For this reason, it was nicknamed ‘Maqui’, chosen from a long list of suggestions that arrived on social media. Thanks to its resistance and adaptation to different terrains, the maquilishuat (Tabebuia rosea, also called the pink trumpet tree) is ideal for reforestation and environmental conservation projects.
