The spread of the fire at the foot of Mount Bakadjik near Yambol has been brought under control. On-duty teams of firefighters remain at the site during the night, due to the danger of igniting new outbreaks, said the spokesperson of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Tatyana Pavlova.
The fire started in the early afternoon in dry grass and brush. Because of the strong and changing direction of the wind, it spread over a large area between the villages of Kalchevo, Pobeda and the Bakadjik area. Due to the difficult terrain, extinguishing was mainly done by hand.
There is no danger for the nearby villages, as well as for the protected area in the “Bakajik” forest park, which is included in “Natura 2000”, assured the police and the mayor of Tundzha municipality, Stancho Stavrev. On all sides, the flames are surrounded by wide clearings made by agricultural machinery.
“The fire is under control, but it will probably continue to burn until late in the evening. The fire started in the middle of a dry ravine. It is most likely a deliberate arson. Everything is dry, we have not come out of the dangerous fire situation,” commented the mayor of the village Kalchevo Mitko Dimitrov.
