BOLZANO. “At this time we have no elements to say what the motive was, but it is assumed that the neighbor is a collateral victim.” The prosecutor said, Federica Iovenewho offered the Bolzano Public Prosecutor’s Office a reconstruction of the dynamics of the events linked to the double homicide in San Candido.
“The first soldiers who managed to enter the building – the prosecutor reported – saw pools of blood and glimpsed the silhouette of a person. Then the shooting started again, so the soldiers left the house. Subsequently, there were further gunshots fired from the balcony of the house”. “At that point – Iovene continues – it was deemed necessary to call in the special forces, which took some time”. When the GIS managed to enter the apartment, according to the prosecutor’s reconstruction, Ewald Kühbacher started shooting again, finally turning the gun on himself with a shot to the throat.
“The emergency doctor who was on site stabilized him, he was then taken to the hospital in Bolzano where, however, he died after a few hours”, explains Iovene. Only at that point was it possible to inspect the interior of the building, where the body of Kühbacher’s father, Hermann, was found lying on the bed, shot with a firearm, and, in the stairwell, the body of a woman, later identified as Waltraud Jud, a neighbor, also shot, “mainly – the prosecutor reports – in the back, which makes us understand that the woman had perhaps gone up to see what was happening and, then, having understood, tried to escape, but was shot in the back”. “We don’t have the results of the surveys yet, but this is the dynamics of the facts that we have found”, concluded Iovene. ”
“There are no police records or signs that could indicate that Ewald Kühbacher, who killed his father and his neighbor yesterday in San Candido despite being an introvert, was a dangerous individual and therefore needed attention”, said the major. Simone Carlinicommander of the San Candido Carabinieri company at the press conference at the Bolzano Prosecutor’s Office. The man, who had previously worked as a security guard, had been unemployed for several years and lived with his elderly father. “The weapons he owned were legally held. He had a passion for this type of equipment. We do not know at this time how many weapons he owned, because the history shows various acquisitions and transfers”, said the Carabinieri major.
“He shot with a nine-caliber pistol, the shell casings found seem to come from the same weapon. And he also used this weapon against himself. He declared that he had several weapons, but for now, given the state of the apartment which was not particularly tidy, only air rifles have been found which are not of interest to the police. In the apartment placed under seizure, investigations are continuing in any case”, concluded Carlini.
