The nephew accused of murdering his aunt in Ioannina, in the Perivleptos area, has been remanded in custody.
The 36-year-old man will remain in temporary detention after his testimony before an investigator and a prosecutor. During the testimony, the accused revealed his motivation, and as stated by his lawyer Vasilis Gorgolis, he disclosed the reasons that led him to lose control, resulting in him shooting his 62-year-old aunt.
According to ERT, in the upcoming period, defensive material will be submitted that confirms the claims of the self-confessed perpetrator.
The motives of the crime
The self-confessed murderer of the 62-year-old woman found dead in her home in Ioannina, in the Perivleptos area, is said to have killed his aunt for financial reasons.
He himself confessed to the police who had taken him into custody on Friday, August 16, when the crime was made public. The Police Directorate had also collected his vehicle to be moved to a safe location and thoroughly examined by the Forensic Institute, as stated by epiruspost.gr.
When the 36-year-old realized that the noose around him was tightening, he began to confess to his action.
Criminal charges
Following his confession, the 36-year-old was arrested and taken before the prosecuting authorities. At the same time, he was charged with:
- Intentional murder with possible intent,
- Illegal possession and use of a firearm.
The nephew was led to the investigator and was given a deadline to testify on Monday.
How the crime happened
The murder occurred in the early hours of Thursday, August 15. The nephew shot the 62-year-old woman with a hunting shotgun in the chest and abdomen.
The following day, Friday, August 16, he returned to the deceased woman’s home in the morning and notified the authorities of her death.
According to reports, he pointed out to the police the location where he disposed of the weapon after his heinous act.
The motives for the crime are still under investigation, although the prevailing scenario suggests it was due to financial disputes.
The 36-year-old is expected to face the prosecutor following his arrest.
The relationship between the perpetrator and the victim
According to reports, the nephew and aunt had a close relationship. The 62-year-old lived alone, while the 36-year-old frequently visited her.
Neighbors of the unfortunate woman stated that she loved him as her own child, as he was the son of her sister. At the same time, she financially supported him, and as reported by Mega, she opposed him living at his father’s home.
However, no one can say for certain what led the nephew to kill his aunt.
