Cardinal changes in the Lithuanian champions club – “Garliava” is changing coaches and managers

by times news cr

The handball players of “Cascada-HC Garliava SM”, coached by R. Urnikienė, became Lithuanian champions 6 times – in 2012, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024. For the last thirteen seasons in a row, the representatives of Garliava have been among the top three winners of the Lithuanian championship, and they have also won the Lithuanian Handball Federation (LRF) cup four times.

“The club is like my baby, but he has already turned 18 and it’s time for him to go on his own path. I have already started interviewing young professionals to take over both the management of the club and the coaching duties.

I am very happy that it was the people from Garliavis who responded to the invitation and took over the club. – I will help them as much as possible and I will still be near the club until they drive in.

By continuing to train children and the younger generation, I will try to contribute to the growth of the club’s pyramid as much as possible”.

Deividas Jovaiš became the new coach of Cascada-HC Garliava SM team. The 26-year-old Garliaviškis is a long-time Lithuanian men’s national team handball player who has played not only in Lithuanian but also in Norwegian clubs during his career. While playing in Norway, D. Jovaiš has already coached the local women’s handball team.

“The offer to become the coach of the Lithuanian champions was quite unexpected. The opportunity to coach the strongest team in the country took over and I took on new responsibilities with great enthusiasm.

I understand that taking over the helm of a title-winning team from a long-time champion coach sets the bar very high and you will feel pressure to repeat the results.

But this only gives even more motivation to work, said D. Jovaiš. – Girls’ handbag is very different from men’s. I already felt that difference when coaching women at the Norwegian club.

On the handball court, the physicality of men and women differs the most. But psychologically, women are perhaps even stronger and one can feel their great desire to work in training.

We managed to find a common language with the players and I hope this will continue throughout the season. Therefore, I aim to delve as much as possible into the handball training process, analyze as many matches as possible and try to gather as much information as possible.”

Laimis Dambrauskas has been appointed as the new manager of Cascada-HC Garliava SM club. Until then, Garliaviškis worked in the Lithuanian Handball Federation as a manager, manager of national teams and organizer of international championships.

L. Dambrauskas, who graduated from the sports management studies at the Lithuanian Sports University, himself played in the Kaunas “Ėuolo” team, and after his career as a handball player, he stayed to work as a manager in this club.

“The most important thing is to ensure continuity of work and continue to grow, based on the experience of handball clubs in other countries. We plan to expand the club board, attract new people and increase the volume of work and the potential of the club.

We are glad that Kaunas District Municipality remains our main sponsor. The team has kept the same name as we will continue to work with other major sponsors as well. At the same time, we are expanding the circle of sponsors, because we want to grow the ranks of the Garliava handball community, said L. Dambrauskas. – The highest goals are set for the team on the handball court.

In Lithuania, we want to win all possible titles – the Lithuanian Championship, the LRF Cup and the Super Cup. In the European Cup tournament, we will aim to be among the sixteen best teams. We kept the championship line-up, so we hope that these goals are achieved.”

“Cascada-HC Garliava SM” handball players will start the official competition season on September 7. In the LRF Super Cup match to be held in Pasvaly, the champions will face the winner of the cup “Žalgiris” Kaunas team. September 14 the LMRL regular season will also begin.

Cascada-HC Garliava SM, which will participate in the EHF European Cup tournament for the second season in a row, will meet the Italian club Erice twice in the second round in October.
