The Attorney General’s Office accused González and Machado of “instigation to insurrection, criminal association and conspiracy.”
Towing William Saab, Venezuela’s Attorney General announced the opening of a criminal investigation against Edmundo González and María Corina Machado for their public statement urging the Armed Forces and the Police to recognize the opposition’s victory in the presidential elections.
Along with this, González and Machado urged the military not to act against the population and to disobey the orders given by the Nicolás Maduro regime.
“As a result of the dissemination of a statement by former candidate Edmundo González and citizen María Corina Machado in which, outside of the Constitution and the Law, they falsely announce a winner of the presidential elections other than the one proclaimed by the National Electoral Council, the only body qualified to do so, and in which they openly incite police and military officials to disobey the laws; it has been decided to open a criminal investigation into both signatories of the invalid document,” said the Venezuelan Prosecutor’s Office.
The agency charged that the statement “evidences the alleged commission of the crimes of Usurpation of Functions, dissemination of false information to cause unrest, instigation to disobedience of the law, instigation to insurrection, criminal association and conspiracy.”
“The Public Prosecutor’s Office, as the person in charge of criminal proceedings, in its duty to guarantee peace and stability in the country, will remain vigilant against any act that implies the generation of violence or anxiety in the population and that seeks to repeat events that have left painful wounds in the entire Venezuelan family,” said Tarek William Saab.
