“We agreed unanimously. Members of the faction emphasized the right qualities to perform these duties, as the candidate has served as prime minister twice,” Seimas Vice-Chairman Jurgis Razma said to Eltai.

Despite this, the politician noted, there were also grievances in the faction due to the unsuccessful candidacy of Gabrielias Landsbergis.

“There were regrets that it was not possible to appoint Gabrielus Landsbergis, but we understand that only our faction without a president cannot choose the most suitable candidates and we have to put up with the legal reality,” the parliamentarian noted.

ELTA reminds that on Monday Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė presented to the coalition council the candidacy of MEP Andrias Kubilius for the European Commission (EC). According to her, this is the candidate for whom it was possible to find common ground with the president.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis, who was previously discussed in the media and political corridors as a possible European Commissioner, told Elta last Friday that he had received information that President Gitanas Nausėda would not approve his candidacy.

After G. Landsbergis withdrew from the candidates, it was said in the political backstage that the conservative A. Kubilius, who was re-elected as a member of the European Parliament for a second term, could be offered to fill this position.

A. Kubilius himself assures that he received the offer last week. The MEP says that he has agreed to take on the responsibility of becoming Lithuania’s representative in the European Commission (EC).

The nomination of the Eurocommissioner is submitted by the Government after the position has been agreed with the President and the Seimas.
