Of the total aboard, only fifteen were rescued alive, while the first death was confirmed in the following hours, that of the boat’s cook, Rekaldo Thomas.
Among those enjoying the holiday on the ship was British computer tycoon Mike Lynch along with some family and friends.
According to the aforementioned agency, divers from the Italian fire brigade managed to open access routes to the boat, although their work was extremely limited due to the autonomy of twelve minutes in each dive. For this reason, they have supported themselves with the help of an underwater robot.
Thus, the official number of deaths after the sinking of the ship has reached six, while one is still missing.
Officials believe the ferry was about 700 metres from the port when it was swept by a violent current while passengers were sleeping.
The boat belonged to a group of tourists who had chosen Sicily to spend their holidays and the survivors are mostly English citizens, but also a New Zealander, an Irishman and a Sri Lankan.
The Termini-Imerese Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the tragic drowning.
