“I promise that I will be the best volunteer that the Harrises and [Tima] The Walz camp has ever seen,” Biden said at the end of the roughly hour-long address.
In his speech, the president also mentioned the demonstrations in support of the Palestinians that took place in Chicago near the venue of the convention.
“The protesters in the streets are right. Many innocent people are being killed on both sides,” Biden said in his farewell speech at the convention, adding that it was time to “end this war.”
Biden also urged Americans to ensure that the White House “puts a female prosecutor in the Oval Office, not a convicted felon,” referring to the current vice president, who was once a prosecutor, and her Republican rival, Donald Trump, who received zero convictions in one of his trials.
The Gaza war is one of the most divisive issues among US Democrats.
The US administration’s support for Israel has eroded interest in Democratic candidates among Muslim and Arab-American voters, once a reliable Democratic bloc, particularly in swing states.
In his speech, Biden said his administration would continue to work to “achieve peace and security in the Middle East.”
“We are working around the clock… to prevent a wider war and reunite the hostages with their families, and now to rapidly increase humanitarian aid in the areas of health and food in Gaza, to end the suffering of Palestinian civilians and finally, finally, to bring about a ceasefire and an end to this war, ” said Biden.
