Life expectancy in Germany is catching up again. After the slump during the Corona pandemic, the Federal Statistical Office is now announcing the increase.
After the end of the corona pandemic, life expectancy is rising again. The average life expectancy at birth in Germany in 2023 was 83.3 years for women and 78.6 years for men. This is reported by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden.
Life expectancy has thus increased by around 0.4 years for both sexes compared to the previous year. During the Corona years 2020 to 2022, life expectancy for both men and women fell by 0.6 years compared to 2019. “The level from 2019 has therefore not yet been reached again – but there is a clear catching-up effect,” says the Federal Office.
It is important to know: Life expectancy at birth summarizes mortality across all age groups in one value. This is independent of the age structure and size of the population. Life expectancy is therefore particularly suitable for comparisons over time, as statisticians explain.
Despite the name, it is not a prognosis for newborns today that differs from the life expectancy of adults. According to predictions, boys born in 2023 could live to around 81 to 90 years and girls to around 85 to 93 years, depending on the trend variant.
