Sommer on his retirement: “It was a great honor and a privilege to represent my country at the highest level for twelve years in 94 international matches.” The veteran is currently under contract with Inter Milan.

At the press conference held on Monday, he spoke in more detail about his reasons. Sommer: “During my vacation, I thought a lot. I agreed with goalkeeper coach Foletti to meet in August. It was an honest conversation about my future. He reinforced my decision, and after this conversation about two weeks ago, I decided to retire from the national team.”

Recently, there have been rumors that Sommer is no longer the number one choice in Swiss goal. However, that was not a reason for his retirement. The former Bayern and Gladbach goalkeeper: “I had actually already made the decision before the talks with the officials. They could no longer assure me that I would be the number one, but that was not the main reason. For me, this is normal; it is part of the business. We do not know how it would have turned out. However, I greatly appreciated the honest communication.”

Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel (26) is now the number one.

The turn in the Swiss goal will give Kobel a boost for the upcoming BVB season. The goalkeeper (5 international matches) has always dreamed of standing between the posts at a major tournament. In two years, he will get to represent his country for the first time at the World Cup in the USA.

Sommer made his debut in May 2012 under former Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, participating as the number one in three European Championships and two World Cups. His last international match was in the Euro quarter-finals on July 6 in Düsseldorf against England, which Switzerland lost only after a penalty shootout.
