(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 21 – Biosecurity measures for Italian pig farms against swine fever have been remodeled and updated. The Ministry of Health has issued a new note after the one on August 1, which extends the provisions of the surveillance plan until September 15, after the deadline of August 19, without prejudice to the specific measures envisaged for the protection and surveillance zones and for farms epidemiologically correlated to the outbreaks. On September 15, the measures will be reassessed on the basis of the overall epidemiological situation, the note states, according to which “Regions and autonomous provinces, on the basis of a risk assessment, can adopt further more restrictive measures” or extend the present measures to territories under their jurisdiction even if not affected by restriction zones for PSA.
“On Monday we had the crisis unit and we shared the measures with the regions involved. This note reiterates the provisions already in place and details them further to ensure on the one hand – explains commissioner Giovanni Filippini to ANSA – maximum attention against the risk of diffusion but on the other also to apply all the possibilities to allow the sector to continue working”.
In particular, the note states, in slaughterhouses “it is also considered necessary to strengthen the surveillance activities of the relevant law enforcement agencies, also taking into account possible irregularities in terms of mortality reporting obligations, compliance with the rules on movements and means of transport and biosecurity”.
In each farm, then, disposable clothing (overalls, shoes, gloves and headgear) must be present and used, for each individual subject that enters the clean area of the farms, taking care that such clothing is correctly managed and disposed of after use. Failure to comply with these rules, in the event of an outbreak or preventive culling, may result in the loss of the right to benefit from compensation, and/or an obstacle to tracing activities and considered as a possible factor in the spread of infectious disease and therefore punishable by law.
