All the details of the app «Early warning of earthquakes»

He National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology —Insivumeh— launched the mobile application «Early warning of earthquakes» o ATTAC in February 2024. This is a tool that seeks to promote a culture of prevention and, above all, to alert the population to tremors that occur in Guatemala and thus take the necessary measures to avoid further risks.

It is important to mention that the app does not predict earthquakes, but rather alerts about seismic waves that may pose a risk to people.

Update to version 4.0

Insivumeh reports that, although the National Seismological Network (RSN) and the app’s algorithms have been working correctly, problems have been experienced since May with an independent messaging service on the web, which has caused delays of between 10 and 60 seconds in the delivery of alerts and notifications to the app’s users.

To solve these problems and increase the speed of delivery, the Earthquake Early Warning Version 4.0in collaboration with the Swiss Seismological Service. This version is now available for update or download on iOS and Android devices. So be sure to update your app to receive alerts in a timely manner!

If you have the app installed on your phone, it is likely that the new version has been automatically installed on your phone. However, the institution recommends checking manually to ensure that you have the most recent update.

How does Earthquake Early Warning work?

Seismic Stations constantly record seismic movements that can become earthquakes.

If waves are generated P, S y Superofficial (those that occur when an earthquake occurs), the data is sent to the Earthquake Early Warning System so that the data can be processed.

The system uses algorithms to locate and quantify the magnitude of an earthquake in real time and based on the results it is decided whether to send an alert to the mobile application.

What kind of notifications will I receive from Earthquake Early Warning?

The application will send 3 types of notifications according to the intensity of the earthquake and the time available to take action:

  • Voice command and vibration notification: This notification is sent if the intensity of seismic waves reaches the minimum value and there is enough time for users to take action.
  • Quick notification with sound and vibration: If seismic waves reach the minimum value but there is not enough time for users to take any action, this type of notification will be sent.
  • Silent Notification: This type of alert will be received if the seismic waves do not reach the estimated minimum intensity.

Devices that can download the application

The app is available for Android and iOS devices. It is very important that when you download the app you read the instructions given regarding the location and points of interest settings, as the intensity of the earthquake will be estimated at your current location or at points of interest.
