Jonatham Lucas Araújo
A resident of Recanto das Emas, in the Federal District, Jonatham Lucas Araújo Lima, 27 years old, died on the 8th after touching down at an airport in Armenia, a country located between Asia and Europe. The main suspicion is that Jonatham fell ill after being forced to drink an unknown liquid.
Currently, the case is confidential, and there is still no information about the possible presence of the drugs involved. Jonatham’s father, Rogério Hipólito, revealed that “there is no clear news about what happened”, and that the family is waiting for more details about the incident.
Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it is following the case in cooperation with local authorities and the Brazilian family. The ministry reported that it is providing the necessary consular assistance and taking care of the procedures related to the death, but did not provide further information due to the confidentiality involved. The Embassy of Armenia in Brazil expressed solidarity with the family and said that the case falls under the jurisdiction of the Embassy of Brazil in Armenia. The embassy said it has made an inquiry with the Armenian authorities and will release the information as soon as it receives an official response.
According to the chairman of the Public Revenue Committee of Armenia, Rustam Badasyan, Jonatham died on the way to the hospital. In an interview with the Armenian newspaper “News” on Thursday (15), Badasyan detailed that during the inspection at the airport, Jonatham was instructed to drink the liquid found in a bottle. “This is not a normal procedure, and there is an ongoing investigation,” Badasyan explained.
Jonatham’s family only found out about what happened last Friday (16), despite the fact that his death happened on the 8th, Rogério Hipólito said that Jonatham made a video call to his family before the trip, it appeared that he was happy and aware of the work. “Suddenly, we lost contact”, cried the father.
He also explained that the airport staff told his son that he should drink the liquid or throw it away. “They said it was a bottle of wine, but we don’t have any more information beyond that,” said Rogério, who also revealed that the family is conservative and does not consume alcohol or illegal substances.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that consular assistance was provided according to the guidelines and that the transfer of mortal remains is a family decision and cannot be paid for with public resources, according to § 1 of Article 257 of decree 9,199/2017. The ministry also emphasized that, out of respect for privacy and the Access to Information Law, details of individual aid cases are not disclosed to Brazilian citizens.
