by time news

Ioannina is declared in a state of emergency until September 18 following the severe weather that struck the city with hail and heavy rain last Sunday.

According to ERT, the mayor of Ioannina, Thomas Begkas, informed the municipal council on Wednesday evening about the development, after a request that the municipal authority submitted to the General Secretariat for Civil Protection. As noted, citizens who have suffered damage from the severe weather may be compensated, while the municipality will be funded to address problems caused by the adverse weather.

Mr. Begkas, in the first official briefing after the extreme weather events, mentioned among other things that there was no warning from the General Secretariat for Civil Protection either to the authorities or to the citizens, while on the contrary, the next day, 112 was activated. He stated that the municipality’s mechanism was mobilized immediately and that there were no clogged drainage systems; however, the grates were blocked by debris during the severe weather.
