Ji Young-hee Academic Discussion Held to Discuss ‘Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra Establishment and Development Plan’

The ‘2024 Ji Young-hee Academic Discussion’ was held on the 21st in the seminar room on the 3rd floor of the Pyeongtaek Southern Culture and Arts Center with the theme of ‘Establishment and Development Plan of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra.’

The Ji Young-hee Academic Discussion Society systematizes the footsteps of Ji Young-hee, a pioneer in the modernization of Korean traditional music, sheds academic light on her artistic world, and promotes her various achievements by turning them into content.

This year in particular, it had more meaning as it looked into the development plan related to the establishment of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra, which is in the footsteps of Professor Ji Young-hee. The Ji Young-hee Academic Discussion was chaired by Vice Chairman Kim Ki-soo of the Ji Young-hee Memorial Foundation, and the keynote speakers and discussants had in-depth discussions.

The first keynote speaker, Park Ho-seong, former director and permanent conductor of the Seoul Metropolitan Traditional Music Orchestra, gave a presentation on the topic of “Current status and challenges of the operation of traditional music orchestras in Korea.” Former director Park Ho-seong presented on a wide range of topics, including the birth of traditional music orchestras in Korea, conductor Ji Young-hee of the traditional music orchestra, the growth and development of traditional music orchestras, and challenges.

In particular, regarding the tasks of the traditional Korean music orchestra, he advised, “As the general public’s interest in K-culture and other things increases, the traditional Korean music orchestra must also put on stage future-oriented and high-quality artistic works, and in order to do so, it must improve into an organization equipped with the best skills.” He added, “In order for the traditional Korean music orchestra to stand proudly at the center of Korean culture and arts, new transformation is needed in all areas including composition, performance, and conducting.

The second keynote speaker, Kim Jae-young, the permanent conductor of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra, presented on the topic of ‘Establishment, operation, and development plan of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra.’ Permanent conductor Kim Jae-young reviewed the potential positive effects of the establishment of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra with a focus on overseas cases, and after talking about the operation and development plan of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra, he explained the business plan of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra for 2025.

Pyeongtaek City Traditional Korean Music Orchestra is preparing regular concerts, planned concerts, local exchange concerts, visiting concerts, invited concerts, and overseas concerts, and announced that it plans to operate with the following goals in order to raise the status of Pyeongtaek City as a center of culture and arts and provide cultural enrichment to citizens of various classes: △ reinterpreting the value of tradition with a modern sensibility, △ expanding global influence and international exchange aimed at globalizing traditional Korean music, △ strengthening cooperation with local communities, △ sustainable growth and innovation, and △ continuous challenges toward the future.

On this day, the panelists included Kim Seung-gyeom, Chairman of the Welfare and Environment Committee of the Pyeongtaek City Council, Park Sang-jin, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Korean Music at Dongguk University, Choi Sang-hwa, former Professor of the College of Korean Traditional Music at Chung-Ang University, Song Seon-won, Vice Chairman of the Ji Young-hee Memorial Foundation, and Seo Kang-ho, Chairman of the Pyeongtaek Arts Association, who participated in a lively discussion.

Kim Ki-soo, vice president of the Ji Young-hee Memorial Society who served as moderator, said, “Today’s academic symposium is a meaningful discussion where presenters and discussants will explore the meaning of the founding of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Korean Music Orchestra and ways to develop it,” and added, “I hope this will be a valuable opportunity to further research the meaning of Professor Ji Young-hee’s founding of our country’s traditional Korean music orchestra.”

Koh Hee-ja, the president of the Ji Young-hee Memorial Foundation, said, “The Ji Young-hee Memorial Foundation holds an academic conference related to Ms. Ji Young-hee every year,” and added, “This year, the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra was founded, and Ms. Ji Young-hee founded and conducted the Korean Traditional Music Orchestra. It was a meaningful discussion to look into the meaning of the founding of the Pyeongtaek City Traditional Music Orchestra and think about ways to develop it.”

Meanwhile, the Ji Young-hee Memorial Society has been promoting various projects every year since its establishment in 2002, such as the Ji Young-hee Academic Discussion, Pyeongtaek Ji Young-hee National Traditional Music Competition, Ji Young-hee Arts Festival, Ji Young-hee Traditional Music Creation Contest, and Ji Young-hee Content Discovery Project, to promote Ji Young-hee, a historical figure from the Pyeongtaek region and the father of Korean folk music.
