On the 23rd, the Office of the President announced its official position that it would “wait and see” regarding Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok’s referral of the case of President Yoon Seok-yeol’s wife Kim Kun-hee’s alleged receipt of a Dior bag to the investigation review committee. The Democratic Party of Korea urged, “The investigation must be conducted again from the perspective of the people.”
An official from the Office of the President told reporters this immediately after Prosecutor General Lee’s referral to the Investigation Committee and then remained silent. However, the atmosphere within the Office of the President is that it is difficult to understand the background of Prosecutor General Lee’s referral to the Investigation Committee even after receiving a report on the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office’s investigation results of no charges. There were also opposing opinions within the prosecution regarding the referral to the Investigation Committee, but most of them said that it was difficult to understand Prosecutor General Lee’s intention in referring the case to the Investigation Committee.
A key official from the ruling party criticized the case in a phone call with the Dong-A Ilbo, saying, “He was indicted on charges of violating the Anti-Corruption Act, but the investigation revealed that there was no quid pro quo. I don’t know what else he wants to confirm by holding the special committee meeting,” and “This is nothing more or less than the purpose of the special committee meeting to pursue his own politics.” Another official said, “The Supreme Prosecutors’ Office said, ‘The evidence judgment and legal interpretation were faithfully carried out,’ but isn’t it contradictory to leave the decision to the special committee meeting?” and “It’s painful to talk about the special committee meeting’s decision, which is so incomprehensible.”
The ruling party also responded by saying, “We will see how things go.” People Power Party Spokesperson Jeong Gwang-jae said in a phone call, “I believe the prosecution will handle it fairly according to procedure.” There are also concerns within the party that the controversy over Mrs. Kim could flare up again.
A Democratic Party leadership official said, “We welcome the referral to the Investigation Committee,” and added, “We expect the Investigation Committee to make the right decision, as it includes external experts.” However, internally, there is also a view that the Prosecutor General is trying to “build up a case” to give the prosecution’s investigation results procedural legitimacy. The Fatherland Innovation Party criticized, “They should issue an ‘indictment order’ with their authority. The Investigation Committee is just trying to avoid responsibility.”
