On May 9, German Jonas Deichmann began a world record attempt. His goal: to complete the most triathlons in a row. Now he has achieved it.
Jonas Deichmann has done it and set a world record with his 106th long-distance triathlon, which involved swimming 3.8 kilometers, cycling 180 kilometers and running 42 kilometers without a single day’s rest. The 37-year-old German extreme athlete, who has also cycled 5,500 kilometers from New York to Los Angeles and set off running back to New York one day after arriving, completed the world record triathlon on Thursday in Roth.
At the finish line, he was greeted by several hundred people. He wore the starting number 106. “It’s crazy what’s going on here today. It’s awesome. Thanks Roth,” said Deichmann, who had announced with a broad grin shortly after getting up – documented via social networks – “It’s going to be awesome.”
He was cheered on repeatedly at the side of the course during his record-breaking triathlon. Before he started the “run”, as Deichmann likes to call the marathon, he treated himself to a quick espresso.
As on all previous days, his record attempt started on May 9th, Deichmann was again accompanied on the course by many sports enthusiasts. There were an estimated 200 people running. The course he is covering corresponds, with the exception of the swimming section, to the course at the legendary Challenge Roth, where he started with the professionals on day 60 of his project.
In his “Challenge 120” he has now covered 402.8 kilometers in the water, cycled 19,080 kilometers and ran 4,452 kilometers. But Deichmann is still going. Only the current record set by Briton Sean Conway – set in 2023 – for beating a long distance is not Deichmann’s thing. He came up with the number 120 because the total corresponds to the distance he covered in his triathlon around the world from September 2020 to November 2021.
