New Delhi : Union Home Minister Amit Shah will review inter-state coordination among Naxal-affected states in a high-level meeting to be held in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur on Saturday. In another meeting on the same day, Shah will also review the steps taken towards security and development in the Maoist-affected areas of Chhattisgarh, sources said here on Wednesday.

The inter-state coordination meeting is expected to be attended by chief secretaries and directors general of police of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, besides top security officials of the central government. In his three-day visit to Chhattisgarh, Shah will also visit the Mahaprabhu Vallabhacharya Ashram in Raipur, review the functioning of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in the state capital and attend a meeting related to the Ministry of Cooperation.

125 Naxalites killed, 325 arrested

Earlier, Shah had said that after the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power in the state late last year, in just five months, about 125 Naxalites were killed, over 352 were arrested and about 175 surrendered. Security personnel had gunned down 29 Naxalites in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district on April 16. This was the highest number of Naxalites killed in a single encounter in the history of the fight against Maoists.

Decrease in violence affected districts

According to the data of the Union Home Ministry, the number of incidents of Left Wing Extremism was 14,862 in the decade 2004 to 2014, which decreased to 7,128 between 2014 and 2023. The number of deaths of security force personnel in incidents of Left Wing Extremism has decreased by 72 percent. 1,750 security personnel lost their lives in the period 2004 to 2014, which has decreased to 485 between 2014 and 2023. In the year 2010, the number of violence-affected districts was 96, which has decreased by 53 percent and in 2022 it has come down to 45.
