New Delhi: Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is facing a financial crunch. To increase revenue, JNU is planning to sell or rent out two of its properties. These include Gomti Guest House and the building at 35 Feroze Shah Road. JNU Vice-Chancellor Shantishree D Pandit said that the university is facing financial crunch due to the reduction in financial assistance from the central government. The university is also going to request the Ministry of Education to collect rent from 12 national institutions running without rent in its campus. JNU is considering rebuilding the property at 35 Feroze Shah Road through public-private partnership. For this, the approval of the central government will have to be taken. Gomti Guest House, which is near the FICCI building, will be rented out to a private company. According to a report in The New Indian Express, this will reduce the maintenance cost of the university, which is currently very high.
Plan to collect rent from national institutions
Apart from this, JNU is planning to collect rent from the national institutions running without rent in its campus. The rent received from these institutions can become a regular source of income for the university. The reason is that due to restrictions on fee hike, it has limited options to raise funds.
This plan to reduce the burden of electricity bills
To reduce the burden of electricity bills, JNU is also taking steps like installing solar panels on its campus. This is the biggest expense of the university. JNU hopes that by getting the status of ‘Institute of Eminence’, it will get good financial help, which will reduce its financial problems.
