jpnn.comJAKARTA – The Council of Professors (DGB) of the University of Indonesia (UI) urged the DPR and the government to stop the revision of the Regional Head Election Law (UU Pilkada) which is currently waiting to be ratified in the DPR plenary session in Jakarta, Thursday.

The UI Council of Professors assessed that the discussion on the revision of the Regional Election Law ignored the Constitutional Court Decision Number 60/PUU-XXII/2024 and the Constitutional Court Decision Number 70/PUU-XXII/2024 which were read by the Court on Tuesday (20/8).

“The discussion of the revision of the Regional Election Law by ignoring the Constitutional Court Decision Number 60 and Constitutional Court Decision Number 70 a day after it was decided, clearly the DPR has seriously injured the statesmanship demanded from the people’s representatives,” said the Chairperson of the DGB UI, Prof. Harkristuti Harkrisnowo, reading the DGB UI statement when contacted in Jakarta, Thursday.

He represented more than 60 professors from various disciplines at the University of Indonesia who agreed to the statement, reminding the lawmakers that such changes could lead to disputes between high state institutions, such as the Constitutional Court versus the House of Representatives. For the DGB UI, such a situation would only damage national life.

“The inevitable consequence is the collapse of the state’s authority, high state institutions, and the law will decline to its lowest point along with the collapse of public trust,” said the professor of law who delivered the DGB UI statement.

In the same statement, he also said that the actions of the political elite in the DPR who wanted to revise the Regional Election Law were a denial of their oath of office as representatives of the people.

“The council members who should be overseeing and ensuring the sustainability of the Reformation have instead betrayed us by refusing to comply with the Constitutional Court’s decision issued to safeguard democracy in this country,” he said.

He emphasized that the Constitutional Court’s decision is final and binding on all, including all high state institutions.

The UI Council of Professors urged the DPR and the government to stop the revision of the Regional Election Law.
