Gangnam-gu is expanding parking areas for personal mobility devices and conducting a joint campaign between the public and private sectors. Gangnam-gu (Mayor Seongmyeong Cho), which draws the future of a city where dreams gather, is responding to the problem of illegal parking of shared kickboards by installing new parking areas for personal mobility devices in 56 locations around subway stations such as Hakdong Station and Gangnam Station and areas with a high number of complaints, and will conduct a joint traffic safety campaign between the public, private, and police sectors at Gangnam Square (Exit 11 of Gangnam Station) at 11:00 AM on August 27.

Recently, shared kickboards being indiscriminately parked and stopped on the streets has caused increasing inconvenience to pedestrians and even threatened their safety. Accordingly, the district is expanding the number of personal mobility device parking areas from the existing 10 to a total of 66 in order to build infrastructure for safe kickboard parking. Installation of 50 of the 56 new parking areas has been completed, and construction is underway on the remaining 6. The parking areas are divided into 29 3m×1.5m areas, 16 4m×1.5m areas, 10 5m×1.5m areas, and 1 8m×1.5m area by size, and parking areas are clearly indicated through road markings and signs. Starting in September, the district plans to strengthen crackdowns on parking and stopping and towing of personal mobility devices parked outside of designated parking areas.

In addition, the district will conduct a joint public-private-police campaign on August 27 to improve awareness of users of personal mobility devices and establish a safe pedestrian culture. Gangnam-gu, Gangnam Police Station, Korea Transportation Safety Authority (Seoul Headquarters, Gyeonggi Northern Headquarters), Korea Road Traffic Authority (Seoul Branch), Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (Seoul Metropolitan Headquarters), Ministry of Employment and Labor (Seoul Gangnam Branch), Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office (Industrial Accident Prevention Guidance Division), Quick Service Association, shared kickboard companies, etc. will participate. The campaign plans to attract public attention by conducting various activities such as ▲safety education and compliance with safety rules and guidance on fines for violations ▲writing a pledge for the 365-day safe driving campaign ▲VR safety education on drunk driving and virtual goggles experience ▲provision of free coffee and refreshments ▲distribution of traffic safety promotional materials.

Gangnam-gu District Mayor Cho Seong-myeong said, “I hope that shared kickboard users will comply with parking zones and contribute to creating a safe pedestrian culture,” and added, “We will continue to prioritize the safety of residents and actively respond to the problem of kickboards illegally parked on the streets.”
