North Korea announced on the 24th that it would push forward with the construction of nuclear weapons according to a set schedule, protesting the United States’ revision of its nuclear weapons operation guidelines.

In a statement released by the Korean Central News Agency on the same day, a spokesperson for the North Korean Foreign Ministry said, “No matter how much the United States exaggerates the ‘nuclear threat’ from other countries, we will push forward the construction of sufficient and reliable nuclear forces according to the set schedule.” He also emphasized, “This is the most essential and legitimate exercise of the right to self-defense for regional peace, security, and self-defense.”

He also mentioned the recent official recognition by the U.S. administration of revisions to its nuclear weapons operating guidelines.

The spokesperson said, “The spokesperson for the US National Security Council recently stated that the US administration’s revision of the ‘Nuclear Weapons Operation Guidelines’ is not aimed at any specific country,” adding, “This is nothing more than a childish manipulation of public opinion aimed at justifying a dangerous nuclear use strategy and avoiding criticism from the international community.”

He added, “We strongly condemn and reject the United States’ behavior, which runs counter to the international community’s desire for world peace, stability, and easing of tensions by continuing to fabricate someone’s ‘nuclear threat.’”

He also shifted responsibility for nuclear development to the United States, saying, “If the United States had not developed or used nuclear weapons, the concept of a ‘nuclear threat’ would not have emerged on Earth in the first place.”

The spokesperson emphasized, “We will continue to strengthen our strategic power in every way to control and eliminate all kinds of security challenges that could arise from the dangerous nuclear posture adjustments of the United States,” and “We will resolutely deal with any form of nuclear threat.”

The New York Times (NYT) previously reported that US President Joe Biden approved a revision to the ‘Nuclear Weapons Operation Guidelines’ in March to prepare for nuclear challenges from China, Russia, and North Korea.
