Ekushe medalist essayist, researcher, lexicographer, professor. Ghulam Murshid passed away. He passed away today at 4 pm Bangladesh time while undergoing treatment at Queen’s Hospital in London (Innalillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He was 85 years old.

BRAC University Associate Professor Mahfuza Hilali confirmed the news of Golam Murshid’s death. Professor Swarochish Sarkar informed about his death and said that Golam Murshid had been ill for some time due to old age. On August 22, he became seriously ill and was admitted to London’s Southend Hospital. Later, when the condition worsened, he was taken to Queen’s Hospital. He breathed his last there.

Ghulam Murshid’s wife Eliza Murshid. The couple has two children. Son Panini Murshid is involved in the teaching profession in the United States. Daughter Bipasha Gargi Murshid lives in London. Regarding the family, Mahfuza Hilali said that Golam Murshid’s body will be buried there after his son reaches London.

Golam Murshid was born on April 8, 1940 in Dhamura village of Uzirpur upazila of Barisal. After studying Bengali language and literature from Dhaka University, he started his career by teaching at Mymensingh Agricultural University.

He has taught in the Bengali Department of Rajshahi University for almost two decades. From January 1984 to 2003, he worked in the BBC Bengali department in London. Apart from this, he has taught in several universities in London since 1991. His life and world are vast and varied.

Golam Murshid has written more than 30 books on Bengali literature, history, culture and society. He was also prominent as an essayist. ‘Ashar Chalane Bhuli’, ‘Kalantare Bengali Prose’, ‘Rassundari To Rokeya: One Hundred Years Of Women’s Progress’, ‘Society Reform Movement And Bengali Drama’, ‘Rabindraviswe Purbanga Purbange Rabindracharcha’, ‘Thousand Years Of Bengali Culture’ are his notable books.

Golam Murshid received Bangla Academy Award in 1982, Ekushey Padak in Language and Literature in 2021 for his creative and research work. Apart from this, he has been awarded with numerous awards.
